New York Interschool

Teaching Fellows Program

The Interschool Teaching Fellows Program offers able college graduates an opportunity to gain a supervised teaching experience in their first year of teaching. Established in 1984, the Fellows Program is sponsored by the eight New York independent schools which comprise the Interschool consortium: Brearley, Browning, Chapin, Collegiate, Dalton, Nightingale-Bamford, Spence and Trinity.

The schools seek college graduates with at least a Bachelor's Degree who have sound academic qualifications, a serious interest in education, a high energy level, a genuine commitment to extra-curricular activities as part of student growth, and a desire to work in a college preparatory day school.

Whenever possible, an Interschool Fellow will be assigned a reduced teaching load, with primary responsibility for certain classes. Fellows will work closely with a cooperating teacher or “mentor,” and have the support of and regular contact with the Coordinator of the Fellows Program.

In addition, Interschool Fellows will be expected to attend a two hour evening seminar held weekly and to carry out certain assignments which will provide them with a comprehensive view of the nature of teaching and of schools. Interschool Fellows will also have the opportunity to visit the other schools participating in the Program in order to get an overview of various kinds of schools and educational philosophies.

Candidates should bear in mind that Fellows are hired by the individual schools participating in the Fellows Program according to each school's particular needs and openings for the following academic year. The number of openings varies from year to year, and the schools receive up to 300 applications from candidates seeking Fellows' positions each year for a relatively small number of  openings.

Candidates should send a résumé and cover letter to as many of the schools participating in the Fellows Program as they wish. They should clearly identify the subject(s) and grade level(s) they are prepared to teach. at the same time, they should keep in mind that teachers in small independent schools are expected to be flexible and take on a variety of assignments. Information about special interests and skills is helpful.

Contact information including a résumé and cover letter should also be sent to the Interschool office. Click here to submit this information now. Each candidate's completed file will be kept in the Interschool office, to be made available to the schools at their request.
