Established in 1971, Interschool is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization that serves the educational goals of its eight member schools Brearley, Browning, Chapin, Collegiate, Dalton, Nightingale-Bamford, Spence and Trinity by providing opportunities for enrichment through collaboration. As a consortium of independent schools, we run curricular and extracurricular programs that serve students, teachers, administrators, trustees, and parents, and link our schools to the greater New York City community. The eight Heads of School compose the Board of Directors.
The vitality of Interschool depends on its ability to re-invent itself to meet the shifting needs of the member school constituencies. The focus of Interschool programs has expanded from extracurricular courses for students and training programs for new faculty to include professional development for faculty, recruitment and hiring of faculty of color, the establishment of select academic courses for students, and increasing collaboration with interesting organizations and groups in New York City.
In addition, Interschool acts as a gateway for bringing outside individuals and organizations to work with the independent schools and for organizing the schools to work collaboratively on community efforts such as Hurricane Sandy relief.
Interschool also represents the member schools at national conferences and local community events. Collectively, the schools enroll some 5,000 students and employ approximately 1,000 faculty and staff.
“While each of its institutions has their own specific culture and mission, Interschool recognizes that there are aims common to all of us in education, and that their realization is more likely when we share ideas, resources, and company. The community of eight schools encourages creative, warm, thoughtful collaboration—collaboration which not only produces significant programming and experiences, but also invigorates a spirit of connection among staffers, students, and families across member schools.”
